I-9 Verification Is Changing: What You Need to Know

The temporary COVID-19 accommodations for Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) created in March 2020 expire on July 31, 2023. As a result, employers who have been remotely inspecting the identity and employment authorization documents of employees who work remotely have up to 30 days to inspect these documents after the accommodation period ends physically.

Employers have until August 30, 2023, to physically inspect the original I-9 documents that were inspected remotely under the temporary policy. Exceptions include if a physical inspection was triggered earlier under the temporary accommodations.

Information About the Temporary I-9 Verification Policy

Due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing requirements, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) let ICE provide temporary accommodations to remotely verify the identity and employment authorization documents of employees who were working remotely:

  • I-9 documents could be remotely verified through video, video link, fax, or email until the employee stopped working remotely or until July 31, 2023, whichever came sooner.
  • These accommodations end on July 31, 2023.
  • I-9 documents that were inspected remotely under the temporary policy must be inspected in person by August 30, 2023.

Alternative Procedures to Verify I-9 Documents in Person

DHS plans to develop a regulation that allows alternative procedures to verify I-9 documents:

  • An employer with employees working remotely can have an authorized representative complete the in-person verification of the identity and employment documents.
  • This verification must be consistently done in a non-discriminatory manner.
  • DHS will establish a regulation regarding these alternative procedures for I-9 verification.
  • A proposed regulation was published in August 2022.
  • The public comment period for the regulation closed on October 17, 2022.
  • DHS is reviewing the feedback and will publish a final regulation later in 2023.

For the top lists of “America’s Best Recruiting Firms” Statista and Forbes divided the broad field of recruitment firms into two main categories:

Executive Search (specialized on permanent placement of executive positions with at least USD 100,000 income per year)

  • Professional Search (specialized on permanent placement of professional and specialist positions up to USD 100,000 income per year).

The top lists in these two categories are based on three online surveys among:

  • 18,000 external recruiters (peer review)
  • 3,000 candidates/employees (with experience with recruitment firms within the last three years)
  • 500 HR-managers (as clients of recruitment firms within the last three years)

The surveys took place between 6th December 2016 and the 7th February 2017 with invitations sent by e-mail including a personalized link. Each interviewee could name up to ten recruitment firms per category, either with the help of a long list with more than 4,000 recruitment firms (auto-fill option) or as a free nomination.

How Do you Use LinkedIn to Find Great Accounting & Finance Candidates

On the prowl for quality finance and accounting candidates for your business? If you are like most recruiters, you are tapped into social media on a regular basis. Recent studies have shown that nearly 90 percent of all recruiters look to social media networks like LinkedIn to produce high-quality candidates both passive and active. In other words, LinkedIn can be a gold mine for any hiring manager.

1. Set up a branded presence as an employer of choice

For example, you may want accounting and financial candidates who have at least five years of experience in the industry. Type in the word ‘mid-level’ as you search for a candidate of this status.

4. Connect with the best financial candidates via groups

High-performance financial candidates will likely be participating in industry groups on LinkedIn. You can either create your own groups on LinkedIn or you can become a follower of the most popular LinkedIn financial and accounting groups. Connect with candidates by sharing valuable content, job leads, and in commenting on the content of other participants. You can also follow specific financial and accounting thought leaders and then connect with the people in their networks.

5. Join accounting and finance groups for a variety of benefits

LinkedIn has done a great job of creating groups to connect like-minded people. Those groups provide outlets to learn a number from industry thought leaders. With people sharing similar interests in one area, that’s an easy way to connect to potential job candidates – both active and passive jobseekers. On top of those connections, you also can learn about the current topics in the industry from people on a local, regional or national scale.
